Emerging Leader Training
Emerging leader training is the best way to navigate the upcoming NDIS changes
The Australian Government was expected to announce their response to the Disability Royal Commission at the end of this month. They have however delayed this until mid 2024, stating the need to “continue consultation that will drive meaningful and lasting change”. This likely means that a response to the NDIS Review will likely be delayed as well. Yet business are already making big changes. Premature? Only time will tell.
But bottom line, NDIS businesses need to improve revenue and client satisfactions whilst reducing cost and risk. It may be the only tool we have to combat an increasingly uncertain future.
Harvard Business Review experts suggest that organisations that can ‘increase play, purpose, and potential while decreasing pressure’ are seeing better staff retention, higher profit margins and the best promoter scores.
It’s well known, but not highly appreciated in our sector that Support Workers are the people who actually drive the client experience. Small increases in productivity and retention can have a significant impact on the said experience and ultimately the bottom line of the business.
But how do we achieve this in a highly casualised, high turnover and geographically isolated environment? Emerging leader training.
We upskill the leader… the person they see most frequently who gives them the directions on ‘this is how we do it here’.
A correlating factor of high performing teams is that people who receive high levels of on-the-job coaching by others who are higher in skill, generally have better work satisfaction.
We need to teach our emerging leaders HOW to think not WHAT to think.
- How does every policy impact the client?
- How does each process add benefit to the clients services?
- How do they know they have a safe space to ask questions until they understand?
- How does their continued learning and improving benefit the client?
We know that it is a hard ask to find highly skilled frontline leaders who are going to be dedicated to your mission and vision. But what if we could build them in a way that complimented your business, didn’t take away from operations and allowed for fun in learning.
Supporting Potential have been busy building our 4 month emerging leader training program. This course combines:
- Light touch online learning
- Peer to peer coaching
- Four face to face training days to demonstrate and refine the ‘soft’ skills they have learnt.
Tailored to be the key things any frontline leader in the NDIS Needs to know, we have also tried to make it fun and reinforce the reasons why they are in this industry.
When leaders participate in a gamified learning environment, they are more likely to be motivated to complete tasks, strive for better performance, and enjoy the learning process. In addition, gamification allows for immediate feedback, such as progress bars and leaderboards, which can create a sense of control over learning outcomes and help individuals stay on track.
In addition, a Zippia study on 500 businesses revealed that 30% of respondents admitted that gamification resulted in an enhanced desire to be engaged while working.
So, with the end of FY fast approaching, now is the time to invest in your current frontline leaders. Can you improve upon the current skills within your existing team or begin to build the next layer of up and coming leaders.
If you think training your staff is expensive, try going into this next period of uncertainty with poor frontline leaders. You will quickly realise an investment in knowledge pays the biggest dividends.
